Conditions of Play

Bowls 3 Five Format

Teams and Players:

  • Each team consists of four players with only three players playing at any time.
  • A team can substitute rotate their 4th player into the team at the beginning of an end and they have to play a minimum of 2 ends before another substitution can be made.
  • Each player uses two bowls.

Game Structure:

  • The game is played over two sets.
  • Each set consists of five ends.

Scoring:

  • The team with the highest number of shots after five ends wins the set.
  • If the scores are tied at the end of a set, the set is drawn.
  • If each team wins one set or both sets are drawn, a one-end tie-breaker is played to determine the winner.

Powerplay:

  • Each team can nominate one end per set as a Powerplay end, where points scored are doubled.
  • The Powerplay must be declared before the first bowl of that end.
  • No Powerplay is allowed in the tie-breaker end.

Gameplay:

  • Teams alternate turns to bowl.
  • The jack is placed on the 3-meter mark, and the mat can be placed anywhere along the opposite line between the 'T' marks (2m and 8m from the ditch).
  • Bowls must remain within the rink boundaries; otherwise, they are removed from play.
  • If a bowl touches the jack and then goes into the ditch, it remains in play.

Tie-Breaker:

  • If the game is tied after two sets, a one-end tie-breaker decides the winner.
  • The winner of the tie-breaker end wins the game.
